All the sports business podcasts that matter, and how to get on them.

Today, many if not most things in marketing can be achieved on a shoestring — with a little muscle and a lot of hustle.

As a service provider to sports industry leaders — many of whom own and operate businesses — I live and breathe this mentality. And I believe in it. 100%.

It’s 2020, after all. You know, the time in history when information is available everywhere for free.

And now that podcasts are all the rage in the content world, it’s only natural that a marketer who hustles would begin compiling a list of the ones that matter to his or her business.

Why are podcasts such powerful marketing tools?

Well, that’s simple.

PodcastInsights reported in January that as of year end 2019, there were over 850,000 podcasts and over 30 million episodes. That’s a 55% increase since mid-2018. And because this is such a hot growth area with a healthy listener-base, gaining access to your target audience on podcasts is probably one of the most strategic (and cost-effective) things you can do to market yourself right now with content!

So, as the headline states, I (not a rocket scientist) have assembled a list of all of the podcasts that any sports industry leader should be on.

Because… content strategy.

Identifying your dream podcasts is not rocket science.

Unless you are in the business of trying to reach every person on the planet with your product or service, then you don’t need the 18,000 page guide to media to access the writers and hosts that matter to you. You also don’t need access to the massive PR databases that will cost you $10k per year. And come on, unless you’re Apple or Kim Kardashian West, you really don’t have much of a shot of reaching .03% of the humans on earth anyway.

So, the point is that you don’t need anyone to hold your hand to locate the information you do need on the writers who cover your business. And you definitely don’t need to be a rocket scientist to create a list of the podcasts that serve your target audience, either.

The sports business is much more than skyscrapers and stadiums.

Now we all know that only the very highest executives at the prestigious brand names in sports — the leagues, the teams, the agencies, the media, the brands — will be called upon to appear on podcasts. But what about those sports industry leaders who are out there hustling each and every day to grow their own businesses?  All of those people behind the scenes who are making the game that much better for fans with an innovative product or service?

Don’t those people count just as much as the front office exec?

Some might argue (me) that these leaders in the wings (you) are posting up more income on an annual basis than the tiny group of people sitting in the league offices in Manhattan. I’ve seen those offices. I’ve worked at them. The people in those offices make up just a tiny little piece of the business of sports. Well, the rent isn’t tiny, but that’s irrelevant.

Podcasts are playgrounds for doing business.

While they aren’t quite the golf course of the modern business deal, podcasts are rising in the ranks, quickly, as one of the best ways to prospect and land new business.

So, if you own a business in sports or you are a leader in your niche, you should make it your goal to be heard on at least one of these shows per quarter. Real people are listening. Your peers are listening! Your future clients are listening! I mean, I landed a new client by listening to one single podcast and reaching out to the guest on LinkedIn!

If the podcasts aren’t calling you…

So, if the podcast booker at Bloomberg Sports Business isn’t calling you because you aren’t sitting in a corner office in a Manhattan skyscraper or walking across a pro football field each morning on your way to grab a coffee, then why don’t you just get on with your bad self and call them!?

What value could a league commissioner provide that you cannot? Ok, fine. I’m exaggerating. But still, you’ve got a unique perspective. You’ve earned your place in the business. You have happy, paying clients. You have crushed your revenue goals year after year. You deserve a spot on that podcast.

So, let’s have at it.

And if you take one look at the list and beams of light start shooting out of all of the entrances and exits in your face, by all means, let’s talk. I can make this happen for you. You’ll just need to take the first step and book a call with me.
